The Growing Educational Divide
|
Demos
1/10/2006
5:30 - 7:30 PM
Demos, 220 Fifth Ave, 5th Floor, New York City
|
Does increased economic inequality beget increased educational inequality? New York City Councilperson Robert Jackson looks back at the triumphs and challenges of a twelve-year legal battle for adequate school funding throughout New York State - a lawsuit in which Jackson, as a young parent activist in Washington Heights, was the lead plaintiff. Similar suits have now been filed in forty states, and counting.
Joining Jackson will be Century Foundation Education Fellow Richard Kahlenberg. After a half century after Brown v. Board of Education, Kahlenberg discusses a nation once again drifting toward growing school segregation along economic-class lines--a practice with proven bad results.
Cosponsored by Demos, Campaign for Fiscal Equity, Alliance for Quality Education and The Century Foundation.
